Laos
DISCOVER LAOS
With eye-wateringly beautiful scenery and a rich tapestry of traditional culture, the charming and peaceful country of Laos is one of the least explored countries of south-east Asia. The warm and friendly people are a highlight of any visit, as is the mouth-watering local cuisine with its fusion of French and Asian styles. The mighty Mekong River flows through pristine jungles and mountains that are home to remote hill tribes, whilst the former royal capital of Luang Prabang hosts some of the world’s most well-preserved temples – and they are still in use today. Laidback Laos is easy to visit but difficult to leave.
Luang Prabang is surely the highlight of the country with spectacular pagodas, wats, palaces and temples, its streets often filled with silent processions of monks. Whilst not as magnificent, the small capital, Vientiane, is home to wonderful coffee shops and restaurants as well as crumbling French-colonial architecture and well-preserved Buddhist temples that make it one of the more relaxed capital cities in today’s modern world. Much of the rest of Laos is home to isolated communities, backwater towns, and little-visited hill tribes and it is certainly worth getting off the beaten-track to explore the stunning scenery and get a real feel for the well-preserved traditional culture of one of Asia’s friendliest countries.
